The CCCAA announced that the Cypress College women's basketball team (23-6, 11-1 OEC) has earned a 2017 postseason bid as the 4th seed in the south. The Chargers will host 13th seeded Moorpark College (20-9, 8-2 WSC) on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Admission to the CCCAA event is $12 for adults and $8 for students, faculty, staff, senior citizens 60 and over, and children under 12.
The women's basketball program, led by Orange Empire Conference Co-Coach of the Year Margaret Mohr, will make their ninth straight playoff appearance and look to improve upon their performance in last year's regional playoff where they fell in the third round to Mt. San Jacinto.
The Chargers closed the season on an eight game win streak, which included an exciting double OT victory over Orange Coast College and a win over Saddleback College which ensured them their second consecutive Orange Empire Conference Championship. The Chargers led the OEC in points scored and forced a conference leading 26 turnovers per game. Cypress finished the regular season as one of the top ranked teams in the state when it came to generating turnovers.
The Chargers are led by First Team All-OEC Selections Sylvia Garcia and Alyssa Movchan. Garcia led the Chargers this season in points (12) and rebounds (6.4) per game. Movchan was second on the Chargers in points (10.5) per game and led the Chargers in shooting at 36% from the field. Dominique Culhno and Joi Bertrand were Second Team All-OEC selections. Culhno averaged 9.1 points per game and led the Chargers with 3.6 assists per game. Bertrand was a force on defense for the Chargers as she led them in blocks (1.6) per game and finished second on the team with 4.9 rebounds per game.
Cypress played Moorpark once this season and came away with a 72-69 victory in their opening game of the season.
