No. 17 Women's Basketball Set for Orange Empire Conference Play

The No.17 Cypress College women's basketball team finished 3rd in the Grossmont tournament over the Holidays and opened up conference play on the road against Fullerton College.

The Chargers opened up the Grossmont tournament with a dominant 82-57 win over San Diego City College. Four Chargers finished in double figures led by Alyssa Movchan, who finished with 13 points. Joi Bertrand added 12 points off the bench, while Sylvia Garcia and Patrice Sagiao-Jones finished with 11 points each. Jones also finished with a team-high 7 rebounds.

In the semi-final game, the Chargers fell to No.14 LA Trade-Tech 55-68. Cypress struggled from the field as they were outshot 56% to 33% despite forcing the Beavers into 30 turnovers. Movchan led the way for the Chargers with 23 points, including 4 three-pointers.

In the 3rd place game the Chargers dominated tournament host Grossmont College 91-57. The Chargers' pressure defense got it done, forcing the Griffins into 40 turnovers. Five Chargers finished the game in double figures as Garcia led the way with 16 points. Bianca Silva added 12 points. Gabby Carbajal, Bertrand and Sagiao-Jones came off the bench and scoring 14 points, 10 points and 10 points respectively. Following the game Movchan was named to the All-Tournament team.

Following their 3rd place finish, the Lady Chargers opened up conference play on Jan. 4 at Fullerton College. The Chargers dominated the Hornets in a 73-54 victory. The Chargers overcame a 37% shooting night, again relying heavily on their defensive intensity. Fullerton tuned the ball over 32 times resulting in easy transition baskets for Cypress. Garcia finished with a double-double, including a game-high 23 points and 15 rebounds. Movchan added 11 points, 4 steals and 4 rebounds.

Women's basketball is set to resume conference play tonight on the road against Orange Coast College before their OEC home opener on Friday, Jan. 11. Both games are scheduled for 5:00 PM.
