No. 7 Chargers Finish 2nd in Merced College Tournament

MERCED, CA – The Cypress College women's basketball team (3-1) finished 2nd in the Merced College Tournament this past weekend. The Chargers picked up blowout wins over Foothill and Merced before falling to Diablo Valley in the Tournament Final.

Sophomore guard Sylvia Garcia and freshman guard Gabby Carbajal were selected to the All-Tournament team. Garcia averaged 13 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1.3 blocks per game while Carbajal averaged 9.7 points, 1.7 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal.

W, 73-53 vs. Foothill

Cypress opened up the tournament on Thursday with a decisive win over Foothill. The Chargers' pressure defense forced the Owls into 27 turnovers, allowing Cypress to get up 19 more shot attempts than Foothill. The Chargers shot 38.2% from the field led by 14 points from Patrice Sagiao-Jones (7-of-12). Sagiao-Jones added 9 rebounds and 4 steals. Bianca Silva and Natalie Garcia each finished with 10 points.

W, 80-48 vs. Merced

The Chargers dominated their match-up against tournament host Merced in the semi-final on Friday. Cypress relied on a balanced attack, with 4 players finishing in double-figures. Garcia led the way with 13 points (4-of-8) and 2 rebounds. Freshman Monet Ward added 12 points (5-of-9) and 3 steals. Carbajal and Lizette Martinez each added 10 points.

L, 65-66 vs. Diablo Valley

Entering the Merced Tournament, Cypress was ranked 7th in SoCal and Diablo Valley was ranked 4th in NorCal according to the CCCWBCA Preseason Poll. Trailing by 1 point, the Chargers had a chance to win the game in its final seconds but ultimately came up short.

Garcia and Carbajal led the Chargers with a game-high 17 points each. Garcia added 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 3 blocks. Women's basketball will travel to face El Camino on Tuesday, November 22 at 6:00pm before hosting the 33rd Annual Lady Charger Classic on Dec. 2-4.
