No. 15 Women's Basketball Hands Riverside First Conference Loss

Cypress, CA – The Cypress College women's basketball team (16-5, 3-1) handed Riverside (13-7, 3-1) their first conference loss of the season with a lopsided 64-38 victory on Friday night.

Freshman Bianca Silva had a double-double with 14 points, 12 rebounds, and two blocks while Sylvia Garcia contributed 15 points and two blocks to lead the Chargers to their third straight conference win. The Chargers suffocated the Tigers with their full court pressure, holding them to 23.4% shooting and forcing them to commit 27 turnovers.  

The Lady Chargers came out of the gate strong, taking a commanding 23-3 lead after the opening quarter.

The Chargers continued their tenacious defense and hot shooting in second quarter, opening up with a 5-0 run. Riverside broke out of their scoring drought with 6:58 remaining in the second quarter thanks to a three-pointer by Doylebonet Walker. After a free throw by Erika Nilsen at 5:22, neither team scored a field goal for over three minutes as the score remained 28-10 in the Chargers' favor. Both teams struggles shooting in the first half but the Chargers took a 33-13 lead into the locker room.

The Chargers traded baskets with the Tigers and finished the third quarter with a 46-25 lead. Up 53-35 with 3:23 remaining in the final quarter, the Chargers went on an 11-3 run to put the Tigers away.

Cypress will return to action on Friday, January 22 at home against Santa Ana. Game time is 7:00 pm.
