Women’s Basketball Defeats Orange Coast to Win Lady Charger Classic

 

 Cypress – The eighth-ranked women's basketball team (8-2) captured the Lady Charger Classic title with a decisive 84-69 victory over conference for Orange Coast (2-5) on Sunday evening. Sophomore guard Jeana Magaña was named Tournament MVP and All-Tournament, while sophomore guard Lauren Hong took home All-Tournament honors.

 
Championship Game vs. Orange Coast
The Chargers were in control from the beginning and held a 15-point lead thanks to Hong's hot hand behind the arc (4-of-5). In the second half, OCC tried hard to close the gap and came within seven points, but Cypress pulled away in the final minutes to win 84-69. Hong led the team with a season-high 26 points as she finished the game 6-of-8 from the three-point line. Magaña recorded her second double-double in as many days and third of the season, scoring 10 and grabbing a team-high 10 boards. Sam Nguyen had a great game, chipping in 12 points, while DeShields Fajardo had 10. As a team, the Chargers shot 62% from the three-point line (8-of-13) and 43% for the game (18-of-42).
 
Game 2 vs. Palomar
Behind Magaña's career night and second double-double of the season, the Chargers advanced to the championship game with a victory over previously undefeated Palomar. Cypress built a sizeable lead after the first 20 minutes of play (49-25), but the Comets clawed back into the game as the cut the deficit to single digits. However, the Chargers held tight and went on to win by nine. Palomar out-rebounded Cypress 45-37 as both shot nearly identical field goal percentages (Cypress-45%/Palomar, 44%). Magaña and Erika Nilsen each tallied 10 rebounds to lead the team, while Magaña was lights out in scoring. The sophomore was 10-of-18 from the field, 2-of-5 from the 3-point line and a perfect 9-of-9 from the charity strip. She also tallied five steals and five assists, while DeShields Fajardo led the team with seven assists.
 
Game 1 vs. LA Southwest
The Chargers got off to a sluggish start and led 28-20 at the halftime break, but were able to pull away in the second half at won 59-42 to advance to the semifinal game. Vivian Martinez led the team in scoring with nine, while Lauren Hong, Magaña and Vivian Lara chipped in seven. Magaña had a team-high eight rebounds, but LA Southwest out-rebounded Cypress 50-46.
 
The Chargers will next head to the LA Valley Tournament next weekend, Dec. 12-14, facing Desert in the opening game on Friday at 5:00 pm.
