Women’s Basketball Wins Two at Riverside Tournament

 

Riverside – The Cypress women's basketball team opened up the season with two wins and a loss while playing at the Riverside Tournament over the weekend. The Chargers defeated Glendale (85-67) and Barstow (96-67) before falling to El Camino in the championship game (62-67). Lauren Hong was named to the All-Tournament team after her strong play in all three games.
 
In game one against Glendale, Haley Gorman led the way with a team-high 17 points and six rebounds. Hong (13) and Jeana Magaña also scored in double-digit, while Tess Sanders equaled the team-high in rebounds with six. As a team, the Chargers out-rebounded Glendale 50-40 in the game and shot 39% from the field (25-of-64) and 76% from the charity strip (28-of-37).
 
Against Barstow, the Chargers nearly hit the century mark as three players scored in double-digits. Hong led the way with 18, while Gorman had 12 and Phyillis Macharia chipped in 10. Magaña led the team in rebounds with nine as Cypress out-rebounded Barstow 62-43. Overall, Cypress shot 45% for the game (34-of-75).
 
In the championship game, Cypress led by six with just under six minutes to play, but El Camino would go on to win 67-62. Vivian Lara led the Chargers with 16 points, while Erika Nilsen grabbed a team-high nine rebounds in the loss. The team shot 37% from the field (23-of-62) during the game.
 
Up next, the Chargers will travel up north to the Merced Tournament where they will face Lassen in the opening game on Friday, Nov. 14 at 5:00 pm.
