CYPRESS, CA- The top-ranked Cypress softball team (13-0, 5-0 OEC) continued their undefeated season with two wins this weekend over El Camino and College of the Canyons on Saturday afternoon. In the first game versus El Camino the Chargers victory notched legendary Head Softball Coach Brad Pickler his 1,400th career win.
Coach Pickler's win extends his milestone of the most wins in the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) history. Pickler reached his last milestone, 1,300 wins, against the same team, El Camino, in April of 2017. In that matchup the #1 Cypress Chargers faced the #5 El Camino Warriors and were in the midst of the first ever undefeated softball state championship season. The crucial come back win for Cypress came on a game ending wild pitch scored by Jenny Vasquez. You can find the full recap of the historical game here.
In Saturday's matchup the Chargers found themselves protecting another undefeated record. Cypress fell behind early in the game when El Camino doubled to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead in the second inning. The Chargers quickly answered back in the top of third when Lesley Bojorquez and Kimberly MacPherson both singled in a run to push Cypress back in front. The Chargers would go on too put up two runs in the fifth and sixth inning, but they were unable to sustain the comfortble lead. In the bottom of the 7th Clarissa Chiquete smashed a three run homer to cut the El Camino deficit to 2. Pitcher, Eliza Sandoval quickly shutdown the rally striking out the next three batters and propelling the Chargers to victory, 6-4.
The Chargers will look to continue making history when they return to action on Wednesday, March 4 at home against Golden West College at 2:30 p.m.
