Brannen 3-Run Bomb Knocks Off Hornets, 4-3

CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College softball team (29-4, 16-0 OEC) put an end to Fullerton's 13-game win streak with a 4-3 victory at home on Wednesday. The Chargers entered the game ranked No. 1 in the most recent 3CFCA State Coaches Poll, while Fullerton came in at No. 9.

Freshman Janea Brannen (W, 18-3) did it all for the Chargers on Wednesday, tossing her 16th complete game of the season to secure her 18th win in the circle, while going 1-for-3 with a home run and 3 RBI at the plate. Brannen allowed just 3 runs on 7 hits with 5 strikeouts. Fullerton's Jessica Lopez would receive the loss.

After a quite first three innings, Fullerton got on the board first in the top of the fourth with an RBI single from Lulu Vasquez.

Cypress would answer in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of two infield errors by the Hornets. Marissa Montesdeoca (0-for-3) reached on an error, followed by a walk from Eliza Sandoval (0-for-1). Amanda Campos (0-for-2) reached on a second error, allowing Montesdeoca to score from second and tie the game, 1-1. With two on and two out, Brannen turned on a pitch from Lopez and sent a 3-run homer over the wall in left center field to take a 4-1 lead.

The Hornets were able to manufacture two runs in the fifth to put some pressure on the Chargers, but it was not enough, as Brannen and the Cypress defense would hold Fullerton scoreless the rest of the way and go on to win it, 4-3.

The Chargers will travel to Saddleback College on Friday at 2:00pm to take on the Gauchos, before returning home for a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday.
