No. 2 Cypress Softball Defeats Gauchos Via Mercy, 9-1

CYPRESS, CA – In an Orange Empire Conference match-up on Wednesday, the No. 2 Cypress College softball team (19-2, 10-0 OEC) picked up their tenth victory in conference action to remain unbeaten in the OEC. The Chargers defeated Saddleback College in five innings, 9-1.

Freshman pitcher Janea Brannen (W, 11-2) continues to dominate in the circle. She picked up her eleventh win of the season and pitched her ninth complete game, facing 21 batters over 5 innings, while allowing only 5 hits and 1 earned run.

The Chargers put points on the board early, as the Gauchos walked three Chargers in a row loading the bases for Kimberly MacPherson (2-for-3, RBI) as she stepped up to the plate. MacPherson singled to right field, advancing the base runners and scoring Brannen. The Gauchos then walked Vanessa Ayala (1-for-2, 2RBI) bringing in Lesley Bojorquez (3-for-3, RBI). An error by the Gauchos pitcher allowed for Gabrielle Munoz (0-for-1)to score. The Chargers end the first inning up, 3-0.

The Chargers would score in each of the second, third, and fourth innings bringing the score to 6-0.

The Chargers started the fifth inning with Faith Davalos (1-for-1)up to bat. She would double to center field. A wild pitch by the Gauchos pitcher would advance Davalos to third. A walk to Amanda Campos (1-for-3) would bring Infinity Laufou (0-for-3, RBI) up to bat. Laufou hit to center field with a sacrifice fly, allowing Davalos to score. Brannen (1-for-3, RBI) would hit a double to left field, scoring Campos. A single by Bojorquez and another wild pitch would score Brannen ending the game by the mercy rule, 9-1.

The Chargers face off against Riverside College Friday, March 22 at home. The first pitch is set to be thrown at 2:00pm.
