CYPRESS, CA- The Cypress College softball team (35-0, 17-0 OEC) knocked off Cerritos College (24-11, 6-3 SCS) 6-0 on Tuesday afternoon. The Chargers entered the game ranked No. 1 in California. Cerritos entered the game ranked No. 15 in California.
Destiny Vazquez (21-0) picked up her conference leading 21st win of the season as she shutout the Falcons over 6.1 innings while allowing just 5 hits and striking out 5 batters. Alexis Zavala (2-for-3, RBI) and Nicole Wise (1-for-3, RBI) powered the Chargers offense
Jissel Caballero (9-3) received the loss for the Falcons as she pitched 6 innings while allowing 6 runs on 8 hits.
The Chargers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI double by Zavala. Then Wise drove a 2-out single into centerfield to give the Chargers a 2-0 advantage. The Chargers increased their lead to 3 in the bottom of the second inning as Melanie Okazaki (1-for-4, RBI) drove in a run on a single to centerfield.
The Falcons best chance came in the top of the fourth inning as they loaded the bases with nobody out after two walks and a double. Vazquez was able to get out of the inning by inducing a double play and a groundout as she snuffed out the threat with great pitching.
The Chargers added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning as Rebecca Espinoza was able to race home from third before Kiani Puailoa (2-for-3) was caught stealing to end the inning as the Chargers took a 4-0 lead. Cypress added 2 more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on an error as they went on to win 6-0.
