CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College men's water polo program had not participated in CCCAA competition since 2002 before making their season debut in September of this year. Led by Head Coach Mark Canner, this was a season of growth for the Chargers after finishing with a (6-11) record.
After an up and down first season the men's water polo program is focused on the future and a return to prominence, hoping to duplicate their 1977 conference champion crown.
The season began at the Citrus tournament where the Chargers posted a (2-2) record and had an exciting buzzer beating win against Santa Monica college. They split the double headers on both Saturday and Sunday in which looked to be the start of a promising season.
The Chargers went on a difficult streak in the middle of the season losing 7 of their next 8 games. The team struggled to score over this stretch, but that improved when freshman Cameron Davidson went on to have a dominant season scoring 108 goals. Davidson led the OEC in scoring, while Karl Hays a freshman wing finished 5th in total assists for the conference.
The Chargers have a lot to build on in 2020 after their first season in the OEC Conference. They finished off the 2019 season with a (3-3) record in November when things began to click for them down the stretch. The men's water polo program is motivated to make a run at a title in 2020.
