Cypress College Men's Water Polo Puts on a Show in Return to Action

GLENDORA, CA – The Cypress College men's water polo program had not participated in CCCAA competition since 2002 before making their much anticipated return over the weekend, led by Head Coach Mark Canner. The Chargers traveled to Citrus College for the Owls' invitational tournament, consisting of seven other California Community Colleges and two NCAA Division III institutions, Occidental and Cal Tech.

The Chargers went 2-2 on the weekend, starting with a split double header on Saturday against Cal Tech and Santa Monica. The Chargers fell to Cal Tech in their season opener, 13-10, before picking up their first win in the program's return over Santa Monica, 19-18.

Cypress defeated the Corsairs in dramatic fashion as the fourth quarter buzzer sounded. As the clock was ticking down with 5 seconds left in the game, the two teams were tied at 18-18. Cypress' freshman attacker from Edison High School, Cameron Davidson got a hold of the ball right outside five meters to draw a foul of interference causing an exclusion for the Corsairs. The ball was then re-entered at the spot of the foul allowing Davidson the chance to find the back of the net with a helicopter backhand as the clock hit zero, giving the Cypress Chargers their first win of the season. The freshman made a statement, notching 13 goals in the game and finishing with 32 goals in a four-game span on the weekend.

The Chargers again, split a double header on Sunday. Cypress knocked off Citrus College, 17-11, before falling to Occidental in their final game of the weekend, 15-7.

Men's water polo will look to continue their momentum when they travel to take on Orange Empire Conference rival Golden West on Wednesday, September 18th at 3:00 PM.
