Chargers Force the Draw

CYPRESS, CA- Cypress men's soccer (2-5-2, 0-1-1 OEC) force the draw against the Orange Coast Pirates (0-7-3, 0-1-1 OEC) in the last minutes of the game.

The Chargers fought to the finish as they forced the tie in the last minutes of the match. Both teams struggled on the offensive end as neither team scored in the first half. Cypress missed their early opportunity when Alex Monjaraz crossed the ball to Angel Leyva for the header into the net. Leyva did not execute the play and the Pirate's goalkeeper stopped the ball. The defensive pressure from both ends of the field held each team to only three shots on goal. 

In the second half, the Chargers turned up the heat as they made more attempts on goal. Cypress pushed the ball upfield and found Monjaraz on the right side with an open lane. Monjaraz retrieved the ball on the bounce and attempted to bicycle kick past the keeper, but unfortunately hit the top of the post which caused the defense to recover the ball and kick it out of bounds. 

The match continued scoreless until a Charger mistake occurred near the net that gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead. Desperate for a goal, Cypress pushed the ball up the field every possession they had. Finally, Mikey Serrano saved the team with a shot from outside the box that landed in the back of the net to tie the game.

Parker Morrison had three saves in the net for the Chargers. Charger of the Week, Angel Cristobal set up his teammate Mikey Serrano for the game tying score.  

UP NEXT: Cypress will travel to Santiago Canyon College on Tuesday, October 3rd to continue conference play. The match will begin at 3PM.
