Chargers Upset Dons in Home Finale, 3-2

CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College men's soccer team (2-17, 1-10 OEC) picked up a huge win at home on Friday over the Santa Ana College Dons (10-3-5, 5-3-5 OEC), 3-2.

The Chargers came out with tremendous energy to start the game, taking a 2-0 lead into halftime.

Freshman forward Lorenzo LaViolette netted the game's opening goal, on a well-played ball from Andrew Zaragoza, to take a 1-0 lead in the 8th minute. Cypress continued to attack the Dons' defense, creating an opening for Julio Vazquez to drill a shot from outside the box off the far post and past Santa Ana's keeper in the 18th minute. Despite injury to both Cypress keepers, freshman Martin Ibanez had a tremendous first half between the posts, allowing the Chargers to keep Santa Ana scoreless in the opening half.

Santa Ana matched the Chargers' intensity in the second half, scoring two quick goals to tie the game at 2-2. Santa Ana's Christian Franco Alvarez found the back of the net on an unassisted goal in the 52nd minute, before Abel Bautista netted the equalizer in the 54th minute.

Both teams traded chances for the remainder of the half, but neither team could break through until the 90th minute. LaViolette sped past Santa Ana's defense and snuck one past the keeper for the game-winning goal.

Men's soccer will wrap up their season at Golden West College on Tuesday, November 6 at 3:00 pm.
