Chargers Score Five for First Conference Victory

Chargers Score Five for First Conference Victory

Cypress College (3-7-1, 1-3-0) put on a goal-scoring clinic against Fullerton College (2-7-2, 0-2-2) as the Chargers won 5-1 for their first victory in conference play.

In spite of the scoring heat, the Chargers made use of their home field advantage and dominated possession, creating 15 shots, 7 of which were on goal. Despite the major victory, Cypress' celebration was spoiled by an injury to their starting goalie, Louis Espindola, who came off in the 67th minute after injuring his shoulder from punching a ball out of play.

Freshman Dragan Maksimovic opened up the scoring in the 15th minute after dribbling past his defenders and slipping the ball past the goalie at close range. Eight minutes later, freshman Brandon Dunn found sophomore Sergio Avila with a long pass. Avila controlled the ball, dribbled into the box from the left of goal and drilled a shot past the keeper to double the Chargers lead.

In the second half, Avila found freshman Jonathan Fuller with a dangerous pass in the 51st minute. Fuller found ample space and shot the ball left past the keeper to make the score 3-0. The Hornets mounted pressure in the midfield afterwards and managed to disrupt the Chargers possession. In the 56th minute, Fullerton's Brian Pacheco drew a penalty in Cypress' box and converted his chance with ease to cut the Chargers' lead 3-1.

That was the only goal Cypress would allow for the rest of the match. In the 65th minute, freshman Arturo Olivo slipped an easy pass outside the box to sophomore Ryan Maris. Maris shot a laser from outside the box to regain a three-goal lead.

The Chargers padded up their score sheet in the 72nd minute as Jonathan Fuller found freshman Jesus Rodriguez with a low cross to make it 5-1.
