Men's Golf Begins State Title Defense at La Purisima; Davenport Individual Medalist

LOMPOC, CA – The defending CCCAA State Champion Cypress College men's golf team opened the 2019 season at the PT Conception Open held at La Purisima Golf Club (Par 72) on Sunday and Monday.

The Chargers finished fifth out of 15 teams with a team score of 771. Sophomore Dalton Davenport shot 146, tying Kyoshiro Azumada of Palomar College for the tournament's top score.

"We showed some resilience after a tough first round. We were able bounce back on Monday with one of the lowest team rounds for the entire tournament," said Davenport. "I still think we're the best team out there and we have a good chance to make another run at a title," he added.

Cypress struggled mightily in through the first 18 holes, shooting 394 as a team, with four players shooting 80 or above. The Chargers bounced back with a strong showing on Monday, shooting 377 with only two players in the 80s. Davenport shot a 1-under par 71 on Monday, the second lowest individual round of the tournament, to secure his individual medal.

Men's golf will resume action on Monday, February 11 in the Cuyamaca Classic at Sycuan Golf Course.
