Chargers Finish Second In OEC, Set for SoCal Regional Round

CHINO HILLS, CA – The Cypress College men's golf team wrapped up their regular season at Los Serranos Country Club on Monday. The Chargers finished second in the Orange Empire Conference, earning 39 victories this season, just four shy of OEC Champion Orange Coast.

Orange Coast's Myoung Kim and Cypress College's Matthew Rafter tied for the best average this season and were selected Co-Players of the Year in the Orange Empire Conference. Each had a scoring average of 73.8 strokes per round.

Missing the mark by one stroke was Dalton Davenport of Cypress who held a three-stroke lead over the field heading into the 36-hole conference championship.  He earns all-conference honors with a 73.9 average. Cypress had four players make the all-conference cut with Georgios Bris (75.6) and Ying-Shih Chang (75.9) joining Rafter and Davenport.

"It's good for me to see my scores improve from last year. Most importantly for me was the consistency factor to stay on top," said Rafter. "The team this year has been really solid. We get along really well, which helps when we're practicing and competing with each other every day."

The men's golf team, who finished as the state runner-up in 2017, is now preparing for another postseason run. The Chargers will advance to the Southern California Regional Championship round at Bakersfield Country Club on Monday, May 7.

"We were the state runner-up last year, so we know that the talent is there, basically it comes down to keeping everyone energized. As long as everyone plays there best golf we believe we can win a regional and a state title," said Bris.
