Chargers Begin Conference Matchups

CYPRESS, CA- Cypress men's basketball (7-5, 0-0 OEC) is entering conference play and facing off against OEC teams for the rest of the 2022-2023 season.

After 12 non-conference games, the Chargers have landed at a 7-5 record. Starting the season with a high scoring win against Grossmont, Cypress struggled with a five game losing skid. However, the players and coaches developed an excellent response after a rough start.

The Chargers visited the Monterey Bay Classic Tournament and went undefeated in their three games. Cypress took down Hartnell, Diablo Valley and Monterey Peninsula. During their weekend sweep, Grant Sii was awarded All-Tournament and Slater Miller was named MVP of the entire tournament.

Finding their footing, Cypress visited the Cuyamaca Coyotes after an impressive tournament appearance. The Chargers left Cuyamaca with a dominant 72-51 win. It was an overall team win, with four players netting ten or more points.

Hosting the Canyons Cougars at Don Johnson Court, the game came down to the end. In a game where defense played a key role, Cypress escaped with a last second victory. With the win, the Chargers had improved their record above .500. In their final non-conference game of the season, Cypress welcomed the LA Southwest Cougars. Leading in overall rebounds, steals and blocks, the home team were successful in ending on top.

Approaching the midway point of the season, the Chargers have found some momentum through their six game winning streak. Heating up at the right time, the remainder of their schedule is against Orange Empire Conference opponents.

Don Johnson Court will host the first two Chargers conference games against the Riverside Tigers and Orange Coast Pirates. Led by Sophomores Grant Sii, Hadi Essayli and Cristian Butler the team looks to bring their momentum and continue their winning streak into conference play.

UP NEXT: The Chargers will be hosting Riverside College on Tuesday, December 20th for the first conference matchup. Tip-off will be at 5pm.
