Chargers Upset No. 3 Hornets, 57-50

Cypress, CA- The Cypress College men's basketball team (13-10, 4-7 OEC) shocked the visiting Fullerton College Hornets (19-3, 8-3 OEC) on Friday night, 57-50. Fullerton are the defending State Champions and came into the game ranked No. 3 in the state.

Cypress showed tough hardnosed defense from the tip. The Chargers held the Hornets to 31% shooting from the field and 2-for-12 from the three-point line in the first half. Sebastian Castro led the way on the offensive end scoring eleven points and knocking down three three-pointers in the first half. Aaron Edison was a spark off the bench and poured in nine points of his own. The Chargers went into halftime with a 30-22 lead. As the second half got started, Devion Smith Coleman knocked down back-to-back three pointers to push the Chargers lead to twelve. Kamron Barnes came up big down the stretch with a put back layup to put Cypress up 53-49 with just over a minute to go. The Chargers locked up on the defensive end to seal the game, 57-50.

"I am very proud of our guys effort," said Cypress Head Coach Drew Alhadeff. "Our guys needed a big win. I am ecstatic that our team stayed the course and continue to battle after a few close conference losses. Our identity is playing team defense and we showed that tonight with a win over a very tough team."

 Up Next: The Chargers will travel to Riverside next Wednesday, February 5th, to take on the #1 seeded Tigers. Tip off will be at 5:00pm.
