Chargers Open Season with Victory Over Cougars, 77-62

CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College men's basketball team (1-0) picked up a season opening win at home over College of the Canyons (1-2) on Wednesday night, 77-62.

Four Chargers finished in double-figure scoring on the night, led by 19 points on 6-of-11 shooting from sophomore Mike Magee. Sophomore guards Isaac Stell and Kyle Small each added 16 points, while freshman forward Kae'jon Barnes finished with 15 points and 9 rebounds.

Tied 7-7 early in the first half, the Chargers put together a 14-0 run to take command with 10 minutes to go in the opening frame. Cypress used smothering defensive pressure and timely long-range shooting from Magee and Small to fuel the run.

The Cougars would climb within six late in the half, but Stell drilled a deep three before the first half buzzer, extending the lead to 39-30 at the break.

Canyons had no answer on the offensive end, turning it over a season-high 27 times, resulting in 29 Cypress points. The Chargers went on another run early in the second half, this time led by Barnes, who continued to attack the glass and score second chance points.

Cypress led by as many as 22 before the Cougars made a late surge, cutting the lead to 12, but it wasn't enough as the Chargers went on to win, 77-62.

Men's basketball will return to action on Friday, November 9 when they travel to take on the Grossmont College Griffins at 6:00 pm.
