Currenton Earns Roster Spot At Cal State University Fullerton

CYPRESS, CA – Former Chargers center Josh Currenton has received a roster spot as a walk on with the Cal State Fullerton men's basketball team this fall.

Currenton spent his first two years at Cypress as a grey shirt up until 2015-16 season where he started 28 out of 29 games for the Chargers. Currenton shot 52% from the field and recorded 63 rebounds for the Chargers as he helped lead the Chargers to a 22-7 overall record and the team's first playoff berth in 20 years.

Currenton was born in Watts, California but moved all around the country and attended five different high schools. He did not start playing basketball until his junior year at La Sierra High School and admits that he wasn't very talented. However, his high school coach saw his potential and gave him an opportunity to play.

Currenton decided to attend Cypress College after visiting the campus and seeing all that it had to offer. Since he had relatively little playing experience he spent extra time in the gym working on his game and in the weight room with the team's strength and conditioning coach. All his hard work has paid off as he earned himself an NCAA Division I roster spot. "Josh was a great kid to have on the team, he represented Cypress College as an exceptional student-athlete who was well liked and was a great teammate. He helped out a lot in the community and was a fun person to be around," said Cypress College men's basketball coach Andrew Alhadeff.

On top of being a student-athlete, Currenton held down a part-time job in the Cypress College Financial Aid Office and helped his professor Tracy Van Herk organize activities for kids in the community as a part of the Kindercaminata program.

Currenton graduated with an AA in Geography in the spring of 2016 and is currently majoring in Geography at CSUF. He aspires to become a professor one day so that he can help other students just as his teachers helped him.
