Chargers Win 2015 Don Johnson Classic

Championship Game

Cypress Chargers 76 – LA Harbor Seahawks 69

The host Cypress Chargers (9-2) won the 2015 Don Johnson Classic over the LA Harbor Seahawks (4-7) 76-69. Cypress had trouble handling LA Harbor's zone defense as they struggled to get to the rim in the first half. Cypress shot only 29-percent from the field including 5-of-21 from beyond the arc. The Seahawks outscored the Chargers 24-6 in the paint and shot 64-percent from the field in the first half. LA Harbor led at halftime 37-24. The Chargers fought and clawed their way back as they were able to tie the game at 60 with five minutes remaining thanks to some timely three point baskets. Cypress carried their momentum the rest of the way and pulled out the 76-69 victory to capture the Don Johnson Classic championship. All-tournament selections Dushone Brown and Dharion Tanner led the Seahawks with 21 points and 28 points respectively. Cypress' all-tournament selection O'Shae Williams had 18 points, seven rebounds, and six assists while tournament MVP Jordan Fleck scored eight points.

The Chargers 9-2 overall record is the best start in 21 seasons (1994-95) and the Don Johnson Classic is their first tournament win since the 2001-02 season. 

Third Place Game

Southwestern Jaguars 83 – Rio Hondo Roadrunners 66 

The Southwestern Jaguars (9-5) took third place in the Don Johnson Classic with an 83-66 win over the Rio Hondo Roadrunners (5-8). All-Tournament selection Damian Elam had 14 points and seven rebounds for the Jaguars while Christian Smith led the Roadrunners with 16 points and seven rebounds. Both teams shot over 50 percent in the first half. The difference in the first half was Southwestern connecting on seven shots from behind the arc compared to Rio Hondo's three. The Jaguars led at the half 47-32. Southwestern maintained their double-digit lead for the remainder of the game. 

Consolation Championship

Irvine Valley Lasers 82 - Victor Valley Rams 70

Irvine Valley Lasers (9-3) opened up day three of the Don Johnson Classic with an 82-70 victory over the Victor Valley Rams (6-8). All-Tournament selection Chris Lott scored a team high 18 points to lead the Lasers. Xavier Roy paced the Rams with 19 points. The Rams struggled defensively allowing the Lasers to shoot 62-percent from the field for 39 first half points. Victor Valley was able to get to the free throw line often allowing them to stay in the game. Irvine Valley led at the half 39-35. The Lasers went to a zone defense to start the second half and Victor Valley had trouble attacking the zone which enabled IVC to build a double digit lead. They would not look back as Irvine won the consolation championship 82-70.
