Power Hitting Evens Series with Fullerton in Home Finale

CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College baseball team earned a huge OEC victory in their regular season home finale over district rival Fullerton College on Thursday, 12-3. The win ties the best of three series at one game apiece with the rubber match scheduled for 2:00 pm Friday at Fullerton College.

Sophomore pitcher Connor McCollum (W, 7-1) earned his team-leading seventh win on the mound this season, allowing just three runs on nine hits while striking out five in 6.1 innings.

The Chargers offense tied their season high with four home runs, including two that traveled over 400 ft. from freshman outfielder Jesse Lopez (2-for-5, 2 RBI, 2 HR).

Fullerton's Garrett Molnar (L, 4-6) received the loss, giving up four runs on four hits in five innings of work.

The Hornets controlled the game early, taking a two-run lead into the bottom of the second inning. Cypress answered with a solo home run from Jack Gardner (1-for-3, RBI), his third of the season, to make it a one-run game.

Lopez would tie the game 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth with another solo shot over the left field wall. However, the Hornets regained the lead in the fifth after Montenegro scored from third on a McCollum wild pitch.

Trailing 3-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth, Cypress answered with two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to take a 5-3 lead. The Chargers erupted for seven runs in the eighth, capped off with back-to-back homers from Dominic Campeau (1-for-5, RBI, HR) and Lopez, to put the game out of reach.
