CYPRESS, Calif. – The Cypress College baseball team (21-10, 8-7 OEC) pulled off their first conference sweep of the season as they beat Irvine Valley College (17-15, 5-10 OEC) 3-0 at home on Friday afternoon in game three of their three game series. The Chargers entered the game ranked No. 9 in Southern California, while the Lasers entered the day ranked No. 16.

Henry Martinez (3-3) picked up his third victory of the season as he shut down the Lasers over 8 innings while allowing just 6 hits and striking out 9 batters. Jake Mahood relieved Martinez in the ninth inning as he picked up his second save of the season. Trevor Fonseca (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and Chase Sebby (0-for-2, RBI) led the Chargers offense.

John Stevens (4-3) received the loss for the Lasers as he pitched 8 innings while allowing 3 runs on 7 hits and striking out 2.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Chargers started a 1 out rally. Angel Ortiz (2-for-3) led off the inning with a base hit and Garret Calvert (1-for-2) followed with a single to give the Chargers two runners on and 1 out. Fonseca then laid down a great bunt as he moved both runners over and reached first himself to load the bases. Sebby then drove a fly ball to center field to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead.

The Chargers looked to add to their lead in the bottom of the seventh inning as Paul Gomez (1-for-3) started the inning with a single. Ortiz then singled to give the Chargers two runners on and nobody out. Calvert proceeded to bunt both runners into scoring position. Fonseca then lashed a single into center field to give the Chargers a 3-0 lead that they would not relinquish.

Cypress baseball will return to action against Cuesta College at Sinsheimer Park on Tuesday, April 11 at 2:00 PM.
