No. 5 Chargers Walk Off to 1-0 Win Over Lasers

By Robert Nilsen

CYPRESS, Calif. – The Cypress College baseball team (19-10, 6-7 OEC) walked off to a 1-0 victory over Irvine Valley College (17-13, 5-8 OEC) at home on Tuesday afternoon. The Chargers entered the game ranked No. 5 in Southern California, while the Lasers entered the day ranked No. 14.

Andrew Quezada (6-1) got the start for the Chargers and turned in another spectacular performance as he allowed just 4 hits over 9 innings pitched while striking out 8 batters. Spencer Hereford (2-0) relieved Quezada and picked up the victory after striking out 3 Lasers in the top of the tenth inning.

Austin Reynolds (4-2) got the start for the Lasers and shut down the Chargers as he allowed just 4 hits over 8 innings pitched. Eric Brunst (1-3) received the loss after allowing the winning run to score.

Neither the Chargers nor the Lasers were able to break through on offense as the game was scoreless through 9 innings. The Chargers best opportunity came in the seventh as they had runners on the corners with nobody out, but a pop up, a failed bunt attempt and a strikeout led to no runs scoring. The Chargers also had an opportunity early in the game, but failed to cash in on that as well.

After Hereford shut down the Lasers in the top of the tenth inning the Chargers set out to manufacture the winning run in the bottom of the tenth. Tyler Smith (0-for-1) walked to lead off the inning. Trevor Fonseca (1-for-4) delivered a base hit that sent Smith to third giving the Chargers a chance to win the game. Logan Swofford then walked to load the bases. One batter later Willie Aguilar (0-for-2) stepped to the plate and drove a sacrifice fly to center field as the Chargers walked off with a 1-0 victory.

Cypress baseball will return to action at Irvine Valley College on Thursday, April 6 at 2:00 PM.
