Chargers Take Series Over Santa Ana, 2-1

CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College baseball team (23-10, 11-7) won their series 2-1 against Santa Ana (18-15, 5-13 OEC) after a 4-3 victory in game three on Saturday afternoon.

Andrew Quezada (4-3) received the win for the Chargers after allowing four hits and zero runs, while collecting five strikeouts in five innings of relief. Guillermo Sanchez (4-5) received the loss after seven innings of work. Sanchez allowed seven hit and three earned runs with five walks. 

Cypress right fielder, Cory Wildhagen, was inserted into the lead-off spot for the first time this season. Wildhagen finished the game 3-for-5 with an RBI and one run, giving the Chargers a much needed lift on offense. Santa Ana's Patrick Cromwell finished 2-for-3 with two walks. 

The team's traded runs in the first three innings. The Dons opened up the scoring in the first when lead-off man Tommy Anderson (1-for-5) scored from third on a wild pitch from Joseph Mercado. Cypress answered at the bottom of the inning when Wildhagen scored on a Nick Reeser (0-for-3) sacrifice fly. With the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the second Santa Ana's Jeff Murray (0-for-5) grounded into a double play allowing Chris Major (2-for-4) to advance home. Cypress responded at the bottom of the second with an RBI single from Wildhagen to tie the game 2-2. 

With two on in the third inning, Andrew Ramos (1-for-4) reached first on a Paul Gomez error that allowed Colin Winn (0-for-4) to score and regain a one run lead. Cypress answered again with a run at the bottom of the third. Aaron Case (0-for-3) reached on an error by Cromwell that scored Elijah Skipps (0-for-1). 

Cypress scored what would be the game winning run in the fifth inning with an RBI single from Angel Ortiz (1-for-3). 

The Chargers will return to action on Tuesday, April 26th at Golden West for their final conference series of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
