Power Hitting Lifts Chargers Over Saddleback, 7-5

Cypress, CA – The Cypress College baseball team (18-4, 6-1 OEC) defeated the Saddleback Gauchos (17-5, 5-2 OEC) in game one of their three-game series 7-5 at home on Tuesday afternoon. 

Willie Aguilar (3-for-4) led the way for the Chargers at the plate with two homeruns and four RBI. Tylor Megill (7-0) remains undefeated as he collects his seventh win of the season at the mound. Megill allowed 10 hits and two runs while amassing five strikeouts in six innings of work. Andrew Quezada earned his first save of the season after allowing two hits and two runs while collecting three strikeouts in two and two-third innings. 

After three scoreless innings, the Chargers got on the board first in the bottom of the fourth when Elijah Skipps (2-for-2) drilled a solo shot over the centerfield wall for his team leading third HR of the season. With two outs Bo Coolen hit an RBI double to centerfield scoring Aguilar who reached on a single. Paul Gomez followed that up with an RBI single scoring Coolen to give Cypress a 3-0 lead heading into the fifth. Cypress extended their lead to 5-0 in the fifth after Aguilar hit a two run bomb to centerfield. 

The Gauchos answered with two out in the top of the sixth when Robbie Biehl drilled a double to deep leftfield, scoring Ryan Fitzpatrick and Dallas Dey. Saddleback cut the lead to 5-4 after an RBI triple from Luke Jarvis followed by a sacrifice fly from Jared Donahoe. 

However, the Chargers would regain a three run lead (7-4) with a two run homer from Aguilar. The Gauchos posted one run in the bottom of the ninth but could not complete the comeback, falling to the Chargers 7-5. 

Cypress baseball will resume play on Thursday, March 31 in game two of the series against the Gauchos at Saddleback College. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 pm.
