Cypress Completes Sweep of Riverside

Cypress, CA- The Cypress College baseball team (15-3, 5-1 OEC) completed a three-game sweep of the Riverside Tigers (11-8, 1-5 OEC) after an 8-6 victory on Thursday.

Andrew Quezada picked up his third win of the season, pitching three innings in relief while striking out two and surrendering only one hit.

Cypress got on the board first when they scored two in the bottom of the second. Nathan Rodriguez (1-for-4) singled to right field to begin the inning. Willie Aguilar (0-for-3) then reached on a fielder's choice and would advance to second thanks to an error by the Tiger's shortstop. Two batters later, Paul Gomez (1-for-2) hit an RBI single scoring Willie Aguliar.

Riverside would strike back the next inning when Tommy Pincin (2-for-3) hit a game-tying homerun scoring Sean Smith (3-for-4) after he singled to center. The game went back and forth as both teams traded runs from the third to the fifth inning. The Chargers held a 6-5 lead heading into the seventh inning. Riverside's Garrison Cole (1-for-2) hit the Tigers' fourth homer of the game in the top of the seventh to tie the game 6-6.

The Chargers showed resiliency in the bottom of the eighth as they regained the lead for good. With the score tied at six a piece, Paul Gomez drew a walk to lead off the inning. Gomez would advance to second on a groundout by Derek Reilly. After Brandon Gonzalez got hit by a pitch, Nick Reeser (1-for-3) came through in the clutch ripping a single to center. The centerfielder tried to throw out Reeser at first but overthrew the first baseman allowing both Gomez and Gonzalez to score.

Andrew Quezada pitched a perfect ninth inning to seal the 8-6 victory. Cypress will travel to Cuesta for a non-conference game on Tuesday, March 22 at 2:00 PM.
