Baseball Rallies to Defeat Citrus, 7-5

Cypress, CA – Cypress Baseball (6-1) managed to come back from a three-run deficit to beat the Citrus Owls (4-4-1) 7-5 on Friday afternoon.

Nathan Rodriguez went 1-for-3 with a solo homerun and three runs while Cory Wildhagen went 1-for-1 with two walks and two runs. Henry Martinez was the winning pitcher after throwing 7.1 innings of relief with nine strikeouts.

The Owls jumped to an early lead in the first inning thanks to back-to-back solo homeruns from Rodnee Little and Francisco Ramirez, but the Chargers quickly got on board after Cory Wildhagen scored on a wild pitch from third base.

After starting pitcher Joseph Mercado surrendered a run in the second inning and left runners on first and second, head coach Scott Pickler decided to put Henry Martinez on the mound to get the third out. Martinez surrendered a run in the third inning to give Citrus a 4-1 lead, but managed to silence the Owls bats afterwards.

The Chargers rallied in the fourth inning when pinch hitter Brandon Alamo brought Rodriguez home with an RBI single. John Zanze advanced Alamo to second with a single and Paul Gomez belted an RBI double to score Alamo. Zanze then scored on a wild pitch to complete the tie.

The two teams scored a run in the sixth inning, but the Chargers managed to take the lead in the seventh inning when Garret Calvert scored Wildhagen from third with a deep line out to center field. The Chargers added an insurance run in the eighth inning thanks to a solo homerun from Nate Rodriguez to give Cypress the 7-5 lead.

The Chargers will host Merced tomorrow at 12 PM to extend their winning streak to seven games.
