Five-Run Rally Propels Chargers to 10-1 Victory Over Ventura

Cypress, CA - Cypress baseball (1-1) got their revenge against Ventura (3-3) on Saturday afternoon, cruising past the Pirates to a 10-1 victory.

Tylor Megill had a solid debut on the mound, striking out seven batters in five frames for the win. The Chargers bats lit up Zachary Martirano and Brandon Ward as the two pitchers surrendered seven runs combined. Elijah Skipps, Nathan Rodriguez, and Willie Aguilar had two RBI each while Garrett Calvert had two hits, two runs, and an RBI.

The Chargers capitalized on Pirates' errors in the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Elijah Skipps crushed a two-run RBI triple in the third inning to extend the lead. Cypress seemingly sealed Ventura's fate in the fifth-inning with a five-run rally. Willie Aguilar sparked the rally with a sacrifice fly to score Aaron Case from third. After Skipps was hit by the pitch and Brandon Alamo dropped a sacrifice bunt, Calvert brought Aguilar home with an RBI single. Rodriguez, Angel Ortiz, and Paul Gomez hit three consecutive RBI singles to give Cypress a 9-0 lead.

Ventura managed to score in the eighth inning with an RBI triple by Tony Fonzo, but the team didn't have enough firepower to get a rally going.

The Chargers will travel to Desert for the David Buttles Tournament on Thursday, February 11. They will face San Bernardino in the opening round at 12 PM and then take on the host the next day at 12 PM. They will close the road trip with a game against Palomar on Saturday, February 13 at 10 AM before returning home on Tuesday, February 16 to face Moorpark at 2 PM.
