Saturday Comeback Falls Short as Cypress Splits with Merced

 

Cypress – The Cypress baseball team (7-2) wrapped up its two game series with Merced (5-4) on with a split decision as the Chargers won game one 21-1 on Friday and then fell 13-12 on Saturday.
 
Game 1 – Cypress 21, Merced 1
The Chargers offense was on fire Friday as the team tallied 21 runs and 15 hits for its highest scoring game since 2004 when Cypress defeated Saddleback 25-23. Nathan Kucht got the win on the mound and improved to 3-0 on the season, while Jackson Willeford led the team with four RBI. Austin Case and Blake Ronca each tallied a home run in the win, while Case led the team with four hits.
 
Cypress scored two runs in the bottom of the first, tacked on four in the second, six in the third and eight in the fourth to hold a 20-1 lead. A ground out by Nick Reeser in the bottom of the seventh brought in Case to extend the Charger lead to 21-1, which would prove to be the final score of the game.
 
Game 2 – Merced 13, Cypress 12
The Chargers had a rough game and give up 11 consecutive runs to give the Blue Devils an 11-0 lead after three innings. In the bottom of the sixth, Cypress finally got its offense rolling, scoring two to close the game to 11-2. The Chargers then scored 10 more unanswered runs to take a 12-11 lead in the bottom of the eighth, but Merced clawed its way back with two runs in the top of the ninth to give it the victory.
 
In all, there were 10 errors combined for the two teams, six by Cypress. Grant Mayeau suffered the loss (1-1) for Cypress.

The Chargers home stand continues this coming week when they host Desert on Tuesday, Feb. 17 (2:00 pm), followed by Glendale on Friday, Feb. 20 (2:00 pm) and El Camino on Saturday, Feb. 21 (12:00 pm).
