Baseball Nabs Back-to-Back Victories Over Saddleback

Cypress, CA. -- The Chargers faced Saddleback in two consecutive games this week on Thursday and Friday and came away with two consecutive victories as well, 5-2 and 3-1.

Thursdays game was played at Saddleback and the Gauchos jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning. Cypress came back to score four runs in the 2nd and take the lead, 4-1. Each team added a run to make the final score 5-2.

Matt Esparza started the game at pitcher for the Chargers and threw seven strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings. Dalton Douty is credited with the save in 1 1/3 innings of relief.

In Fridays match-up, neither team scored a run until the third inning when Jack Flansburg singled to center field which scored Jonny Miller to put the Chargers up, 1-0. The game remained scoreless from that point until the 7th inning when Joe Duffin hit his fifth home run of the year to score Jack Flansburg to increase the Charger lead to 3-0.

Saddleback was able to score one run in the top of the 9th but it was not enough to spur a rally for the Gauchos and Cypress won by the final score of 3-1. 

Jaret Vermillion started the game at pitcher for Cypress and got the win throwing eight strikeouts in 8 1/13 innings pitched. Douty came in to relieve Vermillion in the 9th and is credited with the save.

The Chargers now improve to 20-12 overall and 11-8 in conference. They next head up north to the Hancock Tournament April 15-16th.
