Irvine, CA - Irvine Valley's baseball team earned one of its best wins of the season Tuesday afternoon, edging Cypress, 1-0, in an Orange Empire Conference game at home.
The Lasers had just two hits in the contest, but they came at the right time - in the bottom of the ninth inning when IVC scored the lone run of the game.
The run was all that freshman right-hander Chris Lumanlan needed.
Lumanlan pitched a complete-game shutout for the win, which evened his record at 2-2.
Lumanlan, who threw 112 pitches, went nine innings and allowed four hits and two walks with one hit batter and three strikeouts.
It was just the second time that Cypress had been blanked this season.
Irvine Valley was actually no-hit by Cypress left-handed starter Ryan Hartman through eight innings.
But IVC sophomore left fielder David Stone led off the ninth inning with a double off the left center field fence.
Hartman was then relieved by Darren Gidley. A wild pitch by Gidley allowed Stone to take third base.
And then on a 1-2 count, IVC freshman center fielder Matt Harris lined a single to left that brought Stone in with the winning run.
Hartman took the tough-luck loss. He went eight innings and gave up one run on one hit with two walks and one strikeout.
Cypress nearly took the lead in the seventh inning. With Sam Tolleson on second base after singling earlier in the inning, Cypress' Tyler Schultz hit a single to left field.
Tolleson was sent home to try and score.
Stone fielded the ball in left field and threw to freshman third baseman Daniel Poe, who then relayed home to sophomore catcher Ryan Wagner. The throw was just in time and Wagner tagged out a sliding Tolleson at the plate.
It was the third time in two games that Stone, Poe and Wagner have combined to nail a runner at home.
With the win Irvine Valley improved its record to 9-19 overall and 4-10 in conference. Cypress fell to 18-11 overall and 6-8 in conference.
IVC's victory also tied the season series between the two teams at 1-1. They will play for the series on Thursday at Cypress at 2 p.m.
