SAN DIEGO, CA – The Cypress College women's beach volleyball team won 2 out of their 3 matches at San Diego Mesa College on Friday, March 10. The Chargers fell to San Diego City 3-2 and beat San Diego Mesa 4-1 and San Diego State's club team 5-0.
The Chargers fell in their first match 3-2 to San Diego City. The Chargers No. 1 pairing of Rockelle Gholson and Paulina Akinoa lost two close sets 21-23 and 19-21 as they fell into an early hole. The Chargers #2 pairing of Paige Buchanan and Sam Madrid and the #4 pairing of Pam Fa'Alata and Sina Amasio each picked up close victories in three sets, but the #5 and #3 pairings also lost giving the Chargers a 3-2 loss.
The Chargers responded by beating San Diego Mesa 4-1 in the next match. The No. 1 pairing of Gholson and Akiona fell again in close sets. The Chargers won the other four matchups as the No. 2 pairing of Buchanan and Madrid beat Mesa 21-18 and 21-10. The Chargers won the other three matchups in close three set victories as the #3 pairing won the final set 15-13, and the #4 pairing won the final set 15-11 as the Chargers clinched the victory.
In the last match the Chargers cruised to a 5-0 victory over San Diego State's club team. The No. 1 pairing of Gholson and Akiona won the first game 21-12 and 21-13. The No. 2 pairing, No. 3 pairing and No. 4 pairing also easily won their matchups in two sets. The No. 5 pairing of Marisa Spear and Ateya Allan clinched the Chargers sweep with a 15-10 victory in the third set of their matchup after they split the first two sets.
The Women's Beach Volleyball Team will return to action on Friday, March 17 at Santa Monica College as they take on Santa Monica and Bakersfield with the first match set for 9:00 AM.
