The Mesa women's water polo team showed all doubters that they are for real this season as they went 4-0 to win the Chaffey Tournament. The highlight was a 6-5 win over 2014 state runner-up Riverside to open the tournament.
Madi Atkins had another outstanding game in the goal, recording 12 saves to go along with her 4 steals and one assist. Cassie Bernas scored 2 goals including what turned out to be the game winner with 5:29 remaining in the 4th quarter to break a 5-5 tie. Jaicey Tyler scored 2 goals and Analise Voytilla and Bailey Wickliffe added one goal each.
Mesa defeated Cypress 11-3 with Cassie Bernas leading the way with 3 goals and Lilli Lindgard, Jaicey Tyler and Bailey Wickliffe added 2 goals each. Analise Voytilla and Emily Helton each scored one goal. Madi Atkins recorded 13 saves.
Mesa beat Chaffey 12-4 on the second day. Bailey Wickliffe scored 4 to pace Mesa. Analise Voytilla scored 3 and Cassie Bernas 2, Krista DeCima and Jaicey Tyler each added one goal. Madi Atkins had 9 saves in 3 quarters while Lilli Lindgard finished the game with 2 saves.
Mesa beat Cerritos 12-6 to finish the tournament as the only unbeaten team. Bailey Wickliffe scored 7 goals to lead Mesa. Lilli Lindgard had 2 goals while Kirsta DeCima, Cassie Bernas and Jaicey Tyler each had one goal. Madi Atkins had 7 saves in 3 quarters and Cassie Bernas closed out the fourth quarter in the goal and recorded 5 saves.
Mesa is now 7-0 overall and 3-0 in conference.
