Mt. SAC Women Water Polo Win Four Games in Ventura Tourney

(Ventura, CA) Six wins in a row and counting for the Mt. SAC Women's Water Polo team, with the latest coming virtue of a four-game sweep in the Ventura College Tournament last Friday and Saturday, October 6 & 7.

Freshman utility Erin DeAnda and sophomore 2-meter Kayla De Herrera led the Mounties in the four games with 14 and 10 goals respectively.

In addition to the six straight, the Mounties have reeled off 12 wins of their last 14 games scoring an average of 13 goals per game. With the victories the Mounties improve to 13-4 overall.

In three tournaments this season the Mounties are 8-4.

With the season winding down before the playoffs, the Mounties have two South Coast Conference games remaining and a pair of games in the "Battle of the Beach" at Long Beach City College.

Mt. SAC 8, Cypress 7

DeAnda led the Mounties with a game-high five goals in the game, her high for the season to date.

De Herrera had three steals for the Mounties and sophomore defender Alexis Aguirre had two.

Mt. SAC sophomore goalie Shelby Garcia made five saves for the victory.

Mt. SAC 11, Palomar 7

De Herrera led the Mounties with five goals and DeAnda added two goals and had two thefts. Freshman driver Miranda Silva led the team with four steals.

After neither team scored in the opening period, both teams combined for seven runs in the second period with Mt. SAC leading, 4-3 at half.

Mt. SAC held a two-goal, 6-4 lead after three and outscored Palomar, 5-3 in the fourth for the 11-7 final. Garcia turned eight shots in the game.

"We struggled in our first two games with slow starts," Mt. SAC Women's Water Polo coach Chris Jackson said. "In the Palomar game I put the bench in and they tied up the game, 3-3.

"The Fullerton game was tight the whole way."

Mt. SAC 8, Fullerton 6

Three players – Silva (2 steals), DeAnda (3 steals) and freshman utility Sydney Scott (3 steals) - all had two goals each in the game for the Mounties.

De Herrera led the team with four steals.

After a 2-2 tie in the first period, Mt. SAC gained a one-goal lead at the half, 4-3. Scott and DeAnda had two goals each in the first half.

The Mounties outscored the Hornets 4-3 in the second half for the 8-6 final. Garcia made seven saves in the game for the win.

Mt. SAC 15, Allan Hancock 6

For the second time in the tournament DeAnda (2 steals) led the team in scoring with five goals to bring her total to 30 for the season.

De Herrera added four scores, bringing her team-leading season total to 54 goals. Scott added three goals.

Freshman driver Reannon Urias led the team with three thefts.

After a close first half with Mt. SAC leading by two goals, 7-5, they blew the game open with eight second-half goals while allowing only a solo score by Allan Hancock.

DeAnda led the Mounties with three second-half goals.

Garcia and sophomore Grace Barboza split time in goal for the Mounties combining for seven saves.
