Riverside (8-10, 1-1 OEC) led, 47-42, with 11:32 to play, but fell into a tie at 49-all with 9:21 left. Cypress went on a modest 11-5 run over the next 6:12 for a 60-54 lead with 3:09 remaining.
The Tigers closed to within 67-64 and had the ball with 14.2 left before a turnover with three seconds remaining dashed their collective hopes of securing a victory.
Cypress (13-7, 3-0 OEC) was led by forward Kaitlyn Roche with a co-game-high 18 points, while guard Samantha Soria added 14 points (12 of 14 on free throws) and forward Jeana Magana added 13 and a team-high 11 rebounds. For Riverside, freshman forward Kayla Johns (Moreno Valley HS) led the Tigers with a co-game-high 18 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman guard Leilani Chavez (Corona HS) added 15 points and sophomore forward Rikki Frohmader (Redlands HS) chipped in with ten points. Sophomore guard Neka Hunter (Riverside Poly HS) added nine points and eight assists.
Both teams return to action in OEC play on Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 5:30 p.m. when Cypress visits the Saddleback College Gauchos and Riverside hosts the Fullerton College Hornets.
