Cypress College Will Opt-In for Spring Competition

Cypress College Will Opt-In for Spring Competition

CYPRESS, CA - Cypress College Athletics has made the decision to opt-in for both Spring I and Spring II competition in 2021, providing an opportunity for student athletes to compete in each of the college's 14 sport offerings during the California Community College Athletic Association's modified season. The CCCAA requested that member colleges make an opt-in or opt-out decision for Spring I competition by Friday, December 18.

The CCCAA established the COVID-19 contingency plan back in June, which called to move all traditional Fall and Winter sports to the Spring term. Official practice for the Spring I season can begin January 18, while competition is slated for February 5 - April 17. The traditional Spring sports comprise the Spring II season, allowing official practice to begin on March 27 with a competitive season from April 10 - June 23. Due to the circumstances of a modified season, all student athletes who choose to compete will not be charged a season of eligibility according to the CCCAA.

Cypress College President, Dr. JoAnna Schilling, has expressed her support for Cypress Athletics to practice and compete in Spring 2021, while understanding the importance of providing a safe enviroment for student athletes and staff. The Cypress College Athletics Department will follow strict protocols and implement a county approved testing strategy to help ensure the health and safety of all involved. "Our student athletes, coaches, and staff are committed to doing what it takes to compete this season," said Athletics Director, Wes McCurtis. "At the end of the day our goal is to provide opportunities for student athletes. I believe in the resources and support we have available to give them that opportunity," he added.

Cypress College and the North Orange County Community College District (NOCCCD) will continue to monitor Covid-19 updates and adjust their plans for athletic competition accordingly.
