Cypress College Student Athletes Set New Standard for Academic Performance

CYPRESS, CA- Cypress Athletics is proud to announce that over 60% of our student athletes earned a 3.0 GPA or higher during the 2019-2020 academic year. Despite dealing with the difficulties of remote learning in Spring 2020, 35 Chargers earned a 4.0 GPA pushing the cumulative grade point average for all of student athletes to a 3.0.

Cypress College introduced a new version of its Student Athlete Success Center (SASC) this fall to provide academic support to our 276 student athletes. The SASC was introduced on campus in Fall 2018, where it was originally housed in the Cypress College Library and Learning Resource Center. With the support of Cypress College Student Equity Funding, the Athletics Department took over day-to-day operations and staffing of the SASC in 2019-20, moving the Success Center into the Gym II foyer. Athletics was able to provide student athlets with their own supervised study space, computer access, printer access, and tutoring services.

"We are committed to addressing any and all challenges our student athletes face," said first-year Athletic Director, Wes McCurtis. "I am thrilled with the results we've seen so far, but I know we can continue to improve. Ultimately, our goal is to make the SASC a more permanent space on campus where we bring all the resources Cypress College has to offer directly to our student athletes," he added.

The SASC is one of many inclusive efforts at Cypress College to help improve academic success for all students. The SASC was ultimately realized through the collaboration and support of campus administration and is yet another example of how Cypress College has continued to address student success while reducing observable achievement gaps among specific groups of students
