"The Voice" of the Chargers Moves on After 22 Seasons

By Wes McCurtis

CYPRESS, CA – Wyatt Ware, famously known at Cypress College and the CCCAA as "The Voice" of the Chargers, is calling it quits after 22 seasons on the microphone. As the public address announcer for baseball, men's basketball, women's basketball, and women's volleyball, Wyatt became a fixture at Cypress College athletic events. His voice could be heard on the mic at over 1,000 Charger home games and his tenure included 5 State Championships and 12 Orange Empire Conference Championships.

Wyatt began his career as the PA for Loara High School baseball in 1991. After 3 seasons with the Saxons, his Aunt and Uncle helped him reach out to Scott and Brad Pickler, who along with his parents encouraged him to become the announcer for the Chargers and the rest is history. Wyatt began his career with the Chargers in 1994 and was coined "The Voice" in 1997.

While serving as "The Voice", Wyatt graduated from Cal State University Fullerton with a Bachelor's Degree in Communications Journalism. Wyatt won't let a new location take away his love for athletics as he expects his degree and experience with the Chargers to help land him a job with a Minor League Baseball team or local High School.

He will call his final game for the Chargers on Wednesday, September 28th when No. 8 women's volleyball takes on district rival Fullerton at 6:00pm.

What was your favorite Chargers sports moment?

EASY…Needing to beat Santa Ana twice on Championship Day in the 1994 State Finals and doing it.  I got to be a part of a championship as a "Rookie"!

What will you miss most about being "The Voice" of the Chargers?

Just that…Being "The Voice" of the Chargers. I have gotten to be a part of a winning program, meet great people, and have been treated awesomely by every player, coach, and staff person that I've ever met. I have a lot of people that I consider friends now.

Is it a coincidence that you and your idol Vin Scully are walking away from the mic at the same time?

Yes, Vin is the best ever to be behind a mic.  I am leaving, but there will be another "Voice" at Cypress and the program will keep winning. The Dodgers will continue, but nobody can or will replace Scully.  Pure coincidence.
